Karpasi

According to local tradition, the village used to be located on the plain where the airport currently stands, specifically in the area of Trohalomandra, where ruins of houses can still be found. Pirate invasions, however, forced the residents to move to the low Karpas hill to the east of central large plain. The origin of the place name has been the subject of debate. According to one theory, the name of the hill and later the village was derived from the Turkish “karabas: black head.” A second theory claims it is from “kalpak: kalpaki, abbot’s hat,” and a third theory from the plant “karpason: a sort of flax,or cotton” that grew widely there.
