It is so effectively concealed that the visitor does not see it until reaching the top of the overlooking\u00a0hill. Many people lived on the island&#8217;s north shore, in Gomati, before migrating to Katalakkos\u00a0for safety from piracy threats. The local church, Agios Modestos, was constructed by the residents in 1856 with\u00a0their own money and effort. It features a basic gabled roof and colourful wood-carved shields that date from the early twentieth century.
