Evgatis Volcanic Dome
The Evgatis Volcanic Dome is located in the southwest region of Lemnos, east of the town of Thanos. Composed of trachyandesite, the volcanic hill’s shape is characterized by steep and rugged slopes which are associated with the intense volcanic activity that caused magma to rise 19.3-18.2 million years ago. The activity that created this volcanic dome is responsible for the formation of a series of other volcanic domes that are scattered throughout western Lemnos.
During this period of time, viscous magma with a high content of potassium and silicon permeated into the geological formation through faults in the earth’s crust. This resulted in the general uplifting of the area. The viscous magma surfaced as thick lava which then cooled quickly, creating the impressive volcanic dome.
