The Portianos Folklore Museum was established in 1995. The mansion of Vagiakos was bought by Vassilis Poriazis, head of the Association of Portians of Lemnos, Athens, Piraeus, and regions.
The museum’s goal is to be a place where older generations can reminisce about their youth, and the younger generations can learn about the life of their forefathers.
The historic building housing the folklore collection has been designated a protected monument and is a remarkable example of Lemnos folk architecture.
The exhibition takes up two levels of the current structure and the ground floor of the outdoor space, covering approximately 225 square meters.
Through the selection and exhibition of historical artefacts, the main spaces of the museum seek to draw visitors back in time into the way of life of its citizens in former periods.
The methods for displaying the artefacts were chosen after researching and assessing the contents of the collection. The Museum’s facilities were reorganised, and exhibitions are now presented using modern projection and video technology.
