Established in 2007, the Gallery of Contemporary Balkan Art exhibits works by Balkan artists.

The concept began about 10 years ago when members of the Cultural Association of Kondias of Lemnos, who were active in the traditional village of Kontias, decided to hold a Balkan art symposium. The First Symposium was held in Kontias in 1999, opening the way for the eventual establishment of the Kontias Gallery of Contemporary Balkan Art.

Artists from Greece, Albania, Bulgaria, Montenegro, Romania, Serbia, FYROM, and Turkey created artwork and taught young islanders before donating their work to the organization. The symposium was repeated with even greater success in 2001, setting the foundation for the establishment of the Kontia Gallery of Contemporary Balkan Art. The collection at the Kontia Gallery of Contemporary Balkan Art was once focused on Lemnos-themed works and the ways in which the island is portrayed by the great Balkan artists. Since however then the gallery has hosted periodic exhibitions of well-known names from the art world, as well as new artists – and even students.

The Gallery of Contemporary Balkan Art Kontia is housed in a rebuilt traditional stone Lemnian building.
