The Gomati Sand dunes can be found at Gomati, near the settlement of Katalakkos on the northern coast of Lemnos. The sand dunes are large and imposing hills that stand tall in the surrounding landscape. Created by the deposition of sand, these dunes resemble a small desert covering an area of around 70 acres.

The strong NE winds in the area contribute to their creation by transporting and depositing the erosion materials from the surrounding tertiary sedimentary rocks.

The presence of vegetation is crucial to the formation of sand dunes because it actively helps sand retention and protection from further wind erosion.
