Kodias Volcanic Dome

Alongside the Myrina-Kodias road, the Kodias Volcanic Dome stands out in strong contrast to the flat surrounding landscape.

The hill consists of dacitic lava which was formed 19.3-18.2 million years ago. The Kodias Volcanic Dome is a part of the wider group of volcanic structures that characterize the south-west region of Lemnos.

Rising magma, rich in gas content, moved up most likely through tectonic faults and created this structure. During its intrusion, the volcanic material permeated the overlying sedimentary rocks, surfacing as thick lava which cooled on the spot forming the characteristic volcanic dome.

Today, the church of Saint Athanasios is built on the top of this impressive volcanic hill, as well as windmills on its eastern outskirts.
