Metropolis of Lemnos

Built in 1864 in Myrina close to the rock bridge of the Trifoto area, the Metropolis of Lemnos is the church of the Holy Trinity.

The project was carried out by the famous temple builder Zacharias Filippotis of Tinos and was funded by expatriates of Lemnos. The church itself was a three-aisled basilica with a dome and had two impressive bell towers that were carved into the exterior of the building in 1910, funded by Pavlos Psarof.

The iconostasis of the church was sculpted out of wood and plated in gold, and was transported to the Metropolis by the old Saint Nikolaos of Myrina, but during Turkish rule this iconostasis was destroyed and never rebuilt. The martyrdom hagiography of a vow stands out in the church hagiography, with Agios Nikolaos represented as taking the steering wheel of a big sailing ship sailing under a Turkish flag.

According to historical records, there was a temple in the place where the Church of Lemnos now stands as early as 1479. Following the collapse of the Orlofika revolt (1770), the Turks of the Castle burnt the temple and hung the then Archbishop of Lemnos Joachim on the bridge. His statue may be seen today in the beautiful garden that surrounds the Holy Trinity church which includes a well and a stone fountain. Since then, efforts have been made to reconstruct the church, resulting in the establishment of the current Church of Lemnos.
