The Museum of Maritime Tradition is the result of approximately forty years of hard work by the residents of Nea Koutali. It was established in 1996 on the initiative of the Nea Koutali Community Council, chaired by Giannis Moschovakis. The Community of Nea Koutali carried out the building’s expansion and general design of the display units which were finished in 2006 by the Kapodistrian Municipality of N. Koutalis, under the mayorship of Dimitrios Voulgarakis.  The construction of the museum was funded by the community of Nea Koutali, the Municipality of Nea Koutali, the inheritance of Georgios Petridis and the European Initiative “Leader”. Once a community space that was used as a community clinic, the renovated building now houses the museum’s archeological and modern artifact collection. The building of the museum is owned by the municipality of Lemnos (former Municipality of Nea Koutali).

The Museum of Maritime Tradition and Sponge Fishing of Nea Koutali brings to life the Koutaliani people’s history of their homeland and to present sponge fishing as it was once performed by the Koutaliani in their new homeland, Lemnos.

The exhibitions are mostly donations that show the Koutaliani’s cultural awareness, as they initially contributed their household’s archeological relics to their community’s school in the name of legacy and remembrance.
