Palaiokastro Volcanic Dome

Palaiokastro Volcanic Dome is a characteristic volcanic structure in the western part of Lemnos, visible to the visitor from the parking lot on the road to the chapel of Panagia Kakaviotissa.

The scattered hills in the area form a network of volcanic structures that were created 19.3-18.2 million years ago. The permeation of viscous magma with high gas content caused the uplifting of older sedimentary and volcanic rock. Erosion, in turn, revealed the solidified lava that created these characteristic domed structures.
