Panagia Kakkaviotissa

Panagia Kakkaviotissa is an impressive church located on the hill Kakkavos, about four kilometers from Myrina and the nearby Thanos village.

Panagia Kakkaviotissa is built within the hollow of a rock, which “serves” as a roof for the little chapel because it lacks one. It originates from the early 14th century, when monks from Agios Efstratios arrived and built it as part of the Monastery of the Great Lavra of Mount Athos.

According to religious tradition and legend surrounding Panagia Kakkaviotissa, the last monk who left the chapel entrusted the picture of the Panagia to the Moumtzis family of Kontias, who still have it today. It is even reported that the monk then built a boat and set sail towards Mount Athos…

Every year on Easter Tuesday (Lambrotritis), the icon returns to Panagia Kakkaviotissa accompanied by a large number of believers and is solemnly honored.
