Tafoni – Mushroom weathering formation of St. Ioannis

Fascinating erosion formations can be found in the volcanic rocks near the church of St. Ioannis in the area of Saint Ioannis Kaspakas on the west coast of Lemnos.

The enormous voids seen in the rocky coastline of volcanic lavas are known as “tafoni,” and they are the products of erosion. The term “tafoni” means “window” in the Corsican dialect. The erosive force of water, wind, and sea spray loosens the crystals of the minerals in the volcanic rocks and causes the hollowing out of these “tafoni”.
