The Church of Evaggelistria of Moudros

The Evaggelistria church of Moudros is the second largest medieval church of Lemnos and Moudros and it dates to the early 20th century (1903). It is a large three-aisled basilica with two bell towers between which is a large arch framed with an impressive window. Entrance to the courtyard is through a carved stone gate.

The Evaggelistria Moudros church is at the center of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary celebrations on Lemnos. During the official opening of the church in 1919, the church’s epitaph was donated by Admiral Pavlos Kountouriotis, Chief of the General Staff of the Navy who was stationed on Lemnos during the First World War.

The church’s tale, on the other hand, is sad and tragic. Before Evaggelistria of Moudros was built on the spot there was a small chapel of Agia Marina which belonged to the Mount Athos monastery of Koutloumousiou. However, when the Turkish rulers of Lemnos discovered the corpses of officers in a well, they burnt down the church and the monks with it in order to take revenge for the killings. The two who managed to escape found sanctuary in Mount Athos, where they claimed some of the locals were provocateurs seeking to destroy the small church to seize its property. The abbot of Koutloumoussiou Monastery decided to impose a punishment (curse) on Moudros, which was finally settled in 2001 with great festivities.
