The Church of Saint Georgios Atsikis
The parish church of Atsiki on the Greek island of Lemnos is dedicated to St. Georgios and overlooks the village. Completed in 1868, St. Georgios Atsikis is a three-aisled basilica with six distinctive apertures in the exonarthex and eight multifunctional windows on the facade, as well as neoclassical elements, Corinthian pillars, and Russian-style paintings.
The Church of St. Georgios Atsikis is well-known across Lemnos for having the most beautiful bell tower on the island. It was constructed in 1928 using funds provided by the Atsikians Association of New York. The sculptor Giannis Fotiadis from Samsun built this remarkable bell tower out of Romano stone. The bell tower is 5×5 meters tall and is adorned with intricately carved capitals. Initially, an equally remarkable bell from Russia weighing 400 kg was set on the bell tower, but its ring did not only resound in Atsiki but also in the surrounding villages, forcing the residents of Atsiki to lessen it a few years later.
