The Church of St. Georgios Repanidiou
According to the findings of the church’s conservators, St. Georgios Repanidiou was built in the middle of the 18th century (in 1860), as it is a three-aisled post-Byzantine Basilica with neoclassical characteristics, most typical of that time on Lemnos. Its wood-carved iconostasis is stunning, as are its arches with floral depictions on the columns. The church’s icons are brightly coloured and described as magnificent examples of post-Byzantine design. St. Georgios Repanidiou has remained unaltered throughout the twentieth century, since the locals decided to build a new church directly next to it in 1928, without replacing the old one.
The recent completion of conservation work at St. Georgios Repanidiou has now provided devout believers and admirers of ecclesiastical art with a monument of great aesthetic significance. The uncovered colourful ceiling, as well as the cared for antiquities, are attracting an increasing number of tourists.
