The Church of St. Modestos

St. Modestos is near the Lemnian settlement of Katalakko, on the island’s northern coast. The church was completed in 1856 with the money and labour of the locals, who dedicated it to St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals.

The church of St. Modestos features beautiful wood sculptures from the early twentieth century.

The feast of St. Modestos is on December 18, when visitors from all around Lemnos gather in the village. The kehagiades of Lemnos, or the island’s cattle farmers, used to flock to St. Modestos at night to watch the festivities. They would make a special “koliva” dish that was combined with animal food after the church service in order for the animals to “receive the blessing” and be healthy as well.
