The Philoctetes Cave
Located in the NE region of the island, the Philoctetes Cave is found under one of the most important archaeological sites of Lemnos, the Kaveira site. By following a small, narrow path down to the shore, the visitor will be greeted by a big cavern with a big overhead opening that extends into the sea. This path is not the only entrance into the cave.
In Greek mythology, Philoctetes was the hero to whom Hercules gave his bow and arrows. According to legend, Philoctetes was healed from a snake bite by staying in the cave for ten years and by the healing powers of Lemnian Earth. And finally, when the Achaeans required Philoctetes’ assistance to conquer Troy and bring the lengthy war to an end, they returned to Lemnos and begged Philoctetes for forgiveness.
