Therma Hot Springs

Hot springs emerging at the foot of the hill of Profitis Ilias in the Therma region have been used since ancient times. At a temperature of 42-44 degrees Celsius, the water wells up from 2 springs at a depth of around 1200 meters. The water is safe to drink and ideal for balneotherapy.

The existence of hot springs is related to the existence of geological faults and active tectonic activity today. Surface waters find a way down into the crust through the discontinuities in the rocks. There, the water meets the magmatic chambers of Lemnos’ volcanoes, which were once active 20 million years ago and are now enriched with various minerals and gases. Water returns to the surface through the faults with the help of gases and gushes up in the form of hot springs.

Therma’s original thermal bath infrastructure remains intact, including a tiny changing room and a stone bathtub built in the 16th century. The depiction of a route on a 1588 map that connects the Castle of Myrina with Therma and the hill of Profitis Ilias shows the importance of the location and its relationship with the island’s administrative center.
