Virgin Mary of Trigi

The Church of the Virgin Mary in Trigi is one of the most important chapels of Lemnos as it dates to the 14th century. References to the chapel, which then was a monastery, date back to 1364 as it is referred to as a part of Simon Petra of Mount Athos. According to different reports, it was confirmed in 1798 by a patriarchal seal.

Only the eastern side of the original stonework of the Virgin Mary at Trygi is preserved, along with the three-sided altar and the inscription: ” CONSTRUCTED… LOVED MONK OF AXIOTI… IN THE YEAR 1706″ which suggests some sort of a renovation took place.

On the 15th of August, the Virgin Mary of Trigi is celebrated, and people from all over Lemnos gather to the scenic church. The images of the Virgin Mary are regarded as works of great art, while the icon of the Virgin Hodegetria, which has been housed there since 1700, is considered to cause miracles. The Virgin Mary is represented with a white garment, the color associated with purity, and how she reveals herself to the faithful.
