Cape Pournias Quarry
There are several tufa formations towards the end of Cape Pournias. These are deposits made up of porous limestone sandstone mosaic, as well as lattice that include fragments of the molassic formation. Many shells, characteristic of the shallow water, may be found in these Pleistocene deposits. The deposits which have been accumulated on the underlying molassic rocks have a thickness of more than 50m in certain locations.
An open quarry operated in this place and the scale of the site reflects the extent of the operation since it covers the majority of Cape Pournia.
Architectural remains built of tufa have been discovered on the opposite side of the quarry of Pournia, near the archeological site of the temple of Kaviria. These are the ruins of settlements and tombs from the Classical and Hellenistic periods.
