Chavouli Moudros Fossil Site
Among these fossils, an impressive standing fossilized trunk was found. While most of it is buried in pyroclastic rocks, the visible part of this trunk stands 50 cm tall.
The products of the volcanic eruptions of Lemnos’ volcanoes razed and buried the forest that thrived there about 22.3 million years ago. A heavy layer of volcanic debris coated the trunk. These materials surrounded the tree trunk, isolating it and creating excellent conditions for fossilization. The absence of oxygen, along with the presence of hydrothermal solutions, established the ideal environment for silicates to replace organic plant matter molecule by molecule, resulting in the perfect fossilization of wood. As a result, the tree’s morphological qualities, such as the internal and external structure of the wood, remained in good condition.
The fossilized trunk was brought to the surface by the erosion of the pyroclastic rocks over time.
