Erosion formations of St. Ermolaos

Remarkable basin-like formations of erosion in the sandstone layers can be found in the region of St. Ermolaos, a few kilometers north of the village of Varos on the northern coasts of Lemnos.

The region is covered with Upper Eocene-Lower Oligocene sedimentary layers deposited in underwater channels 27-33 million years ago.

Formed by the erosion of sandstone rocks, the basin-like features fascinate visitors with their stunning forms.

The differential erosion is caused mostly by the different composition of the rock, which means sea water and salt from the sea spray and can break through its weaker surfaces and begin the process of erosion.
