The Gomati beach, located on the northwest coast of Lemnos, north of the town of Katalakkos, is home to the impressive Gomati sand dunes. Large prominent sand hills in the surrounding landscape, these sand dunes are formed by wind erosion and the deposition of materials in the area.

Strong NE winds transport the erosion materials from the area’s tertiary sedimentary rocks, actively contributing to their creation. Because dune systems are dynamic and changing, the presence of vegetation is critical in holding down sand and preserving it from further erosion.

The Gomati Sand Dunes cover a large area along the coastline, enough to evoke the feeling of a miniature desert, and an unusual and unexpected scene for visitors to a Greek island.
