Mansions
Besides the grand mansions that are found in the Romeikos Gialos in Myrina, such impressive homes can be found in almost every village of the island. Built in central locations, these mansions were built by villagers of Lemnos who emigrated in the 19th century to America and Egypt. These villagers, or “Egyptians” as they were referred to, would later return and build these remarkable mansions to symbolize their economic prosperity
In contrast with the typical Lemnian home, these buildings did not have an external stairs but an impressive central entrance with stone pillars, carved stone balconies with corbels as well as other elements of decorative stone carving, which gave the facades of the buildings a monumental appearance. Apart from the area of Myrina, exceptional and numerous examples of this architectural type are found in Kornos, Romanos, Kontias, Portianos and Moudros and individually in almost all the villages on the island.
