Neftina Sand Dunes

The Neftina Sand Dunes are located in northeastern Lemnos, northeast of the archaeological site of Kaveri. The impressive dunes that characterize the local area were formed by the erosion of Oligocene sedimentary rocks.

The continuous high-speed wind that transports the products of sandstone rock erosion contributes to their formation. The presence of vegetation actively helps sand retention and protects erosion of these sand dunes.

The vegetation that grows in these coastal systems is mostly herbaceous and consists mostly of Pancratium maritimum, the natural lily of the sea, but also includes asters (Sarcopoterium spinosum).
