Poliochni Sand Dunes
Kokkinovrachos Beach is located south of the prehistoric village of Poliochni and was named after the massive, towering red rock on the beach’s northern end.
The area is characterized by large and impressive sand dunes, formed by the erosion of sedimentary rocks. The strong NE winds of the area contributed to their creation by transporting and depositing erosion materials from the area’s tertiary sedimentary rocks.
Because these systems are dynamic, the presence of vegetation plays a significant role in the formation of sand dunes, as it helps hold sand and protects it from further wind erosion.
