Prassa Limani Tombolo
The “Prasa Limani” Tombolo, found on the northern side of the Agios Ioannis beach, is the sandy path that links the volcanic rock to the shore.
Rising magma penetrated and solidified in pre-existing volcanic rocks and formed the islet. Over time, erosion removed the surrounding rocks, exposing the volcanic vein.
The tombolo is a coastal deposition formation composed primarily of sands and rounded pebbles (cobbles). The formation of a tombolo is formed by the impact of sea waves and the restriction of their transport capacity, which results in materials such as sand and pebbles collecting there, eventually producing a strip of land that connects the island to the nearby shore.
