St. Sotira Tetonic Formations
The peninsula of St. Sotira is located at the northeastern end of Lemnos, west of the Plaka peninsula. The existence of faults system in sedimentary rocks dating back 34-37 million years (Eocene – Oligocene) and, more particularly, the alternations of sandstones and clays in which layers of tuffites appear, characterize the region.
Opposite the church of Agia Sotira along the coastal slope, the layers exhibit an impressive curve which are interrupted by repeated regular fractures that form a distinctive image.
North of the church of Agia Sotira, at the end of the road, is the scenic harbor which is part of the ruins of the old port. It is located at the northern side of the peninsula.
